From a letter written by Mary W. Mitchell after a trip back to NC: (She accompanied her Aunt Allene, who was
born in NC and left there as a young child with her parents, Barney and Mollie) Of course the high point of our
trip was Snow Hill. I had no notion that we would find things as they are. The story is that Great Grandmother
Mitchell had slaves. Before the War Great Grandfather recommended that they sell the slaves and put the
money into land which they did. I don't know how much land they bought, but it is still in the family. Whenever
any land has been sold, it has been bought up by some member of the family. Grandpa and Uncle Jim were
the older boys. They migrated to Arkansas. Uncle Etheldred was eighteen years younger than Grandpa.
(Barney) He became the head of the family and helped his sisters with their affairs. There were nine children
in Grandpa's family, four boys and five girls. The youngest boy, Frank, never married. He is the one that Papa
(Charles F., Sr.) remembered having visited them. Four of the girls married and had families, but of course
none of their descendants are named Mitchell. We saw the children of Uncle Etheldred and of three sisters.
We saw the grandson and great grandson of the oldest sister. Of course Aunt Allene's first cousins are all
much younger than she is. They are the children of Grandpa's younger sisters. Uncle Etheldred had only one
son and his only child is a little girl so the Mitchell name is disappearing from North Carolina. "Uncle Barney"
was a legendary figure to all of them. They had heard of him all their lives, but they had had no word of him for
seventy years. You can imagine their amazement when his daughter suddenly appeared among them. I have
never been so royally entertained in all my life. It was rather as if I were one of the attendants of a visiting princess.
Benjamin Mitchell was married a second time to Lydia Cade Harrison. He was 72 and she was 50. The
marriage took place in 1884. He was not listed on the 1900 Census. She was listed as living with Jim and

Cora Letchworth Harrison. She was listed as mother. Benjamin died between 1884 and 1900.
From Jean Teachey: Benjamin's birth and death dates were given to me courtesy of Ramona Barrow Mitchell
of Goldsboro. She is the daughter of Otis Barrow and granddaughter of Ada Mitchell and Passmore Lindley
Barrow. Benjamin died the last Friday of August 1898.
Goodspeed says in an article about Barney E. Mitchell, that his father was Rev. Benjamin W. Mitchell, a native
of Greene Co., NC, and mother was Mary (Stanley) Mitchell. BW was born in 1812, and Mary in 1817. Mary
died in 1882. Both were Free Will Baptists for many years, and Mr. Mitchell was a minister since soon after the
war. Until that time he had been a lawyer of considerable ability, and was at one time sheriff of Sevier County.
(Published in 1890, Goodspeed's History of Southern AR)
Thomas Turnage (born 13 Nov. 1930) dismantled the Benjamin W. and Mary Elizabeth Stanley Mitchell
dwelling house March 1977. Barney Stanley had given the plantation to them.
The "Old Mitchell Family Cemetery" area is on land now owned by the Turnages and is across from Lakeview
Packing Company. (Believe this is in the Arba area).
Notes for Mary Elizabeth Stanley: Goodspeed says that Mary Stanley was the daughter of Barney Stanley,
originally of Sampson Co., NC, and he died there. Barney was a trader. His wife, Sallie Pridgin was also born
in NC and there passed her last days. He was of Irish-Scotch and she of Dutch descent.
Benjamin W. Mitchell and Mary Elizabeth Stanley had the following children:
i. SARAH ADELINE3 MITCHELL was born on 18 Mar 1835. She died in 1905. She
married ROBERT MOORING. He was born in 1821. He died between 1861-1865.
Notes for Sarah Adeline Mitchell: Sarah Mitchell's family did not want her to marry Robert
Mooring. She was sent away to school and became a teacher. They sent her to Murphysboro,
SC, or Murfreesboro, NC. When she returned home and started her teaching position, she
was visited frequently by Robert. They ran away and got married. He was killed in the Civil
War and is buried in Confederate Cemetery, Richmond, VA.
ii. BARNEY ETHELDRED MITCHELL was born on 20 May 1836 in Greene County, NC. He
died on 15 Feb 1912 in Chapel Hill, Sevier County, AR. He married (1) MARY ANN (MOLLIE)
ROUSE on 21 Dec 1865 in Greene Co., NC, daughter of Abner Rouse and Harriet E. Parks. She
was born on 07 Oct 1849 in Greene Co.,NC. She died on 19 Mar 1877 in Shady Grove, Pulaski Co.,
AR. He married (2) MARY ELIZABETH HICKS on 16 Jul 1879 in Rocky Comfort, Washington Co., AR,
daughter of Elijah Hicks and Elizabeth Farmer. She was born about 1845 in Maury County, GA (Murray).
She died on 30 Dec 1929 in Probably OK.
Notes for Barney Etheldred Mitchell: Entry from book on NC State Troops in the Civil War,
page 497: Mitchell, Barney E., Private Resided in Greene County where he enlisted at age
22, April 25, 1861, for the war. Wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 7, 1862.
Wounded a second time at Chancellorsville, VA, May 3, 1863. Company muster rolls report
him as absent wounded from May, 1863, through December, 1864. Wounded in the battle
of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863, spent six months in a Richmond, VA hospital. Paroled
at High Point, NC in May 1, 1865.
Reference found on internet site where Barney claimed residence in Greene Co., NC.
In Civil War, enlistment was on April 25, 1861 as a Private in A Co., 3rd Infantry Reg. NC.
Enlistment age was given as 22. Barney and brother, James, went to the Lonoke, AR area
in 1870. He came back, however, when his son, Charles, was 13 months old, and Barney
and his wife, Mary Ann, moved to AR where he served as pastor in the Little Rock
Methodist Conference. Dr. Barney E. Mitchell was later a practicing physician and local
preacher in Chapel Hill, AR, just three miles from the Indian Territory Line. Family moved
from NC to AR in abt. 1870 and settled in Lonoke Co. near old Brownsville.
Minister on the Chapel Hill circuit near DeQueen, AR.
From Charles F. Mitchell's book, "Gather Up the Fragments", page 135: When I came to
attend the bedside of my father, who had been a wheel chair invalid for seven years, he did
not recognize me. Paralysis had deadened his body and all faculties except his heart and
lungs; these continued to function for five days, then came to a stop, like the pendulum of a
clock that is run down. I looked into his dear old face that bore the marks of suffering and
disappointment and long waiting for release; a tear stood in his half-closed eye. I wiped it
away and said in my heart, "that is the last one." He had shed many as he stood with
weeping loved ones and new-made graves, or as he ministered to the sick and dying, or
as he brought the gospel to repentant souls, but now he was where no tears ever fall,
where the weary are at rest.
His son, Charles Fletcher, preached Barney's funeral sermon at the request of his many
friends. Charles said in closing, "I have never heard my father say a word that could not
have been said in the company of refined ladies and gentlemen. I never saw him do a deed
that was not honest and honorable from every angle of life. He did not leave his children
very much in material things but he left them a good name which the Bible says is 'Rather
to be chosen than great riches.' Heaven alone will reveal the blessings that have come to
me because my father was a good man." (quotation from Gather Up the Fragments and
other semons, by C. F. Mitchell, pages 136-137.
Barney Mitchell and Mary Ann Rouse were married in Greene County, NC, in December of
1865. In 1870, they went to Lonoke County, AR, and then in 1874, they moved to Pulaski
County, AR. On March 19, 1877, Mary Ann Rouse Mitchell died in Pulaski County, AR.
Barney moved in 1878 to Washington County, AR, and was married to Mollie E. Hicks on
July 16, 1879. In 1879 they moved to Montgomery County, AR, and then in 1881 they
moved to Pike County, AR. In 1882, Barney and the family moved to Sevier County, where
they lived at Chapel Hill, AR. He was licensed to preach in 1860.
We found a record of Barney E. Mitchell in the June 11, 1880, census for Montgomery Co.,
AR, Black Springs Township. It listed Barney E. Mitchell as a clergyman and his age in
1880 was 44 (born 1836). His wife, Mary E. was 35 in 1880, and was born in GA. This
would make her birth year 1845. The census listed Allene as 13 in 1880, and born in NC,
and Charley, son, 10 yrs. old in 1880.

The 125 Greene Co. "Riflemen" left Snow Hill, in May, 1861, marching to Goldsboro,
where they were to become a part of the NC 3rd Regiment, Co. A, Infantry, where they
remained for a month of intensive drilling. After reaching Goldsboro, the number became
168 in the company. They company was sent to New Bern for awhile and then were
transferred back to Goldsboro to wait the expected advance of Burnside. This attack did
not come, so the company was sent to Richmond. They arrived on the battlefield of Seven
Pines just after a battle had been fought. They made camp seven miles from Richmond for
the purpose of picket duty. They had several engagements with the enemy during this time.
In 1862, Co. A. was engaged in some of the most severe and hardest battles of the war. The
Greene Co., men were led by General W. R. Cox and the last shots that were fired in northern
Virginia were fired by the regiment containing Greene County men. The number killed in battle
from Greene County outnumbered that of any other regiment. One account is given that the
ammunition gave out when they were just at the point of defeating the enemy. Co. A saw
action in the battles of Ellyson's Mill, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville,
Winchester, Malvern Hill, Payne's Farm, New Bern, Lynchburg, Wilson, Ox Hill, Goldsboro,
Spottsylvania Court House, Gordonsville, and the Seven Days Battle of Richmond. The 3rd
Regiment Infantry, Co A reached Appomattox Courthouse on Saturday, April 8th, 1865. Most
of the original soldiers had been left behind on battlegrounds. The wounded were numerous.
The flag that they had so proudly waved on the morning of May 1861 when they departed
from the old poplar tree at the old school house in Snow Hill was torn by bullets, ragged, and
bloodstained. They were ordered to open the road to Lynchburg, which was occupied by the
enemy. They were charged by the cavalry, supported by the infantry. The battery was captured
and many of the Greene Co. men were taken prisoners, killed, or a few escaped. The records
show that of the 125 men who left Snow Hill, only 40 returned.
Barney E. Mitchell received a Pension from the state of AR for his service in the CSA. The
application stated that while in the service of the Confederate States of America, he
received a wound through the left thigh, fracturing the femur bone. This happened during
the battle of Chancellorsville, VA. By reason of this wound, to a great extent a portion of the
time he was not able to perform manual labor. The pension was granted on July 30, 1891.
Mary E. Hicks Mitchell later applied for a pension on April 15, 1912, after the death of
Barney. She was granted a pension of $100.
From: "The History of Methodism in Arkansas" "The Little Rock Conference for 1874
received one, L. M. Lewis by tranfer; and admitted on trial B. E. Mitchell, father of
C. F. Mitchell of Oklahoma." (page 110--this was obviously written after C. F. Mitchell had
entered the ministry)
The town of Rocky Comfort used to be in back of the Dollarhide Cemetery. There was a
cave back there that was at the end of Main Street, and the Methodist church was located
on this street. (from My Town by Cecil Woods)
A listing was found for BE Mitchell, 19th School District, both doctor and preacher.
TRIBUTE OF RESPECT, found in the DeQueen Bee, in the issue following the death of
Barney Mitchell:
This is not an obituary, as we have not the data necessary for one, if we felt competent to write it, but only a few
lines in loving remembrance of our old friend and erstwhile pastor, Rev. B. E. Mitchell.
It has been nearly thirty years since we first became acquainted with Bro. Mitchell. He was then pastor of the
Methodist church at Chapel Hill, which he served two years, we think. He did good work and was acceptable in
every way, zealous and faithful to his people and church.
After that he was sent to another charge and was gone from here a year; then on account of an old would he
had received during the Civil War, he located and came back here to live, and has made this his home ever
since.
He took up the practice of medicine and did much good in that way. He said once to a friend in speaking of his
practice, "Yes, I always go when they call for me, often times I've no idea I'll ever receive any pay, but I feel it's
my duty to go and I never refuse any."
He was away from home on a professional visit when he was stricken with paralysis, and for seven years and
one month he lingered among us. It is hard for us to realize what he suffered, for he suffered much at times.
Besides his paralysis the wound spoken of above gave him much pain but was finally subdued and cured by
Dr. Beauchamp.
It is of Bro. Mitchell's cheerful Christian fortitude that we wish to particularly speak. He had always been a very
active, energetic man. He did not wait for opportunities to come and knock at his door, but he hunted them up.
So when affliction laid its heavey hand on the old Christian soldier, and he could no more go, nor "Say go, and
he goeth."
He accepted the mandate and was meekly submissive to the will of his Master. For although his mind was
injured by the disease that rendered him helpless, he was not by a great deal senseless. He remembered his
friends and was always pleased to have them with him.
It was his special delight to be carried to church and there listen to the sermons, songs, and prayers of God's
people. He loved to sing, and that was one thing he would try to do as long as he was able. He sang, in his own
way, the tunes of some old hymns the night before he suffered the last stroke.
His oldest son, Rev. C. F. Mitchell, of Mangum, Ok., and his only daughter, Mrs. Allen (Allene) Dollarhide of
Bismark, Ok., came and were with him to the end.
We would only add that he was a good man, and though he has passed away and we will no more be cheered
by his friendly greetings, for he would sit in his door and greet all that would pass. His life will be an influence
felt for good, many years hence. ----A Friend

Barney is buried in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, Sevier Co., just west of DeQueen. From
DeQueen Hwy 70B west, go left at fork of road with sign for Chapel Hill Baptist Church.
Follow the road on around and the cemetery will be on the left. Barney's grave is through
the main gate and about halfway up the hill. He is on the row with the big stump there by
the cemetery road. WK Dollarhide is a few rows down the hill from Barney, and he has two
stones--the CSA stone, and the original stone. The Chapel Hill church (which is now
Baptist) appears to be the same as the one in our Mitchell book, with only a few changes.
The following is a paragraph from the story "My Town" which is in the Rocky Comfort
Museum: The main street of Old Rocky Comfort ran from the cave due north to what is
now the back of the Dollarhide Cemetery. The stores were on either side of the street and
the Methodist Church was in front of the cave. The old academy was west of the Catholic
Cemetery and the Negro school was in front of what is now Edgar Beck's home. The
Methodist Church, built in 1837, was near the campground that attracted religious campers
from a large area.
From the booklet "The Chapel Hill Bell" by Mary C. McCrory: Excerpt from an article quoted
from the DeQueen Bee: The cause of religion was ably defended by Rev. Hooks and
Dr. B. E. Mitchell for the Methodists; Rev. Elkins and Rev. Stranbury for the Baptists and
Rev. Sossamon preached for the Presbyterians.
The doctors were J. W. Hammonds and his son, O. C. Hammonds. B. E. Mitchell, Methodist
minister, was also a doctor.
Barney was shown on the list of Chapel Hill Methodist Church, February 12, 1888, as being
received by certificate.
iii. MARY E. MITCHELL was born on 21 Mar 1842. She died on 21 Nov 1912.
iv. JAMES STANLEY MITCHELL was born on 27 Jun 1845 in Greene Co., NC. He died on
17 May 1890 in Believed to have died during the Spanish-American War. He married MARY
DELILAH HODGES in Oct 1872 in Pulaski Co., AR, daughter of William R Hodges and Mary A. ?.
She was born on 23 Feb 1854 in Shelby Co., TN. She died on 26 Feb 1949 in Confederate
Soldiers Home, Sweet Home, Pulaski Co., AR.
Notes for James Stanley Mitchell: James Mitchell and his brother, Barney, went to the Lonoke,
Arkansas area in 1870. James stayed and never returned. However, his son Frank," Arkansas
Frank", came back to Greene Co. and was killed by lightning. He is buried in the Old Mitchell
Family Cemetery, Arba, Greene Co., NC.

James Mitchell, Private, resided in Greene Co. and enlisted in Snow Hill at age 18, Aug 29, 1861,
for the war. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9,
1865. Information obtained from "NC Troops 1861-1865, Vol. VIII, Infantry, Company A, 3rd
Regiment, NC State Troops" says that he enlisted in Wayne Co., NC on May 29, 1861. The military
record states that he was in Co. D, 2nd NC Infantry. He was hospitalized at least twice, once at
Winder Hospital in 1862 where he was listed as "sick in Richmond" at some point during May-
September of 1862. From there he was transferred to Petersburg in Oct. of 1862.
Oct. of 1862. In 1864 he was hospitalized with acute arthritic rheumatism and stayed for several
days at the CSA hospital in Charlottesville, VA. Another page of his military record states that he was
present at the battle of Gettysburg. There are several descrepancies as to where he enlisted: one
page says he enlisted at Goldsboro, two others say he enlisted in Virginia. Snow Hill, Greene Co.,
NC is the most likely place.
